After Mayo were beaten by Donegal in this year's All-Ireland football final, many Galwegians were able and quick to point out that it was Mayo's sixth All-Ireland final defeat since 1989. Six finals, (and one draw), and yet no victory.

Sunday afternoon was a very special day for Anthony Cunningham, Tom Helebert and Mattie Kenny’s vibrant panel of hurlers and for Galway hurling.

The Galway hurlers and especially the Galway defence will face the “acid test” this Sunday when they face Kilkenny in the Leinster final at Croke Park (4pm).

The Galway hurlers head to Nowlan Park this Sunday (2.30pm) knowing they must defeat the All-Ireland champions to have any chance of reaching the league semi-finals.

It has been quite a year for Kilkenny’s hurlers.

Kilkenny hurling manager, Brian Cody has donated his All Ireland kit bag to Self Help Africa. The charity, which runs ‘Bag A Bargain’ For Africa fundraiser at the Ormonde Hotel, Kilkenny this weekend are delighted with the new addition to their ‘celebrity bags’ collection.
